Welcome! This is the official blog for World Cinema in a Global Context, an intensive, immersive summer film and Italian studies course in Bologna, Italy. Here you'll find useful information regarding all aspects of the program, including class itineraries, schedules, a brief history of the course and an introduction to the history of Bologna and the celebrated Il Cinema Ritrovato film festival.
About Students come to the heart of Emilia Romagna to study film making, theory, Italian and festival culture under Brown and University of Bologna faculty and an award-winning Italian director, while attending Il Cinema Ritrovato film festival, one of the world’s premiere festivals for restored film. They travel to nearby cities, exploring the rich tradition of Italian cinema, theatre and architecture, while experiencing the gastronomy of a region colloquially known as “la grassa” (translated as “the fat one”), famous for some of the finest cuisine in all of Italy. They live in Brown owned-apartments shared with University of Bologna students, who act as valuable guides and mentors during their time in Bologna. They leave the course having written, produced, shot and edited their own film while living the festival experience; acting simultaneously as filmmaker and viewer-critic. They gain a heightened understanding of the filmic medium at large and Bologna’s unique positioning in the world of festival culture, at once having had their work shown shown on the “big screen” of the Cineteca di Bologna − the center for film restoration – and witnessing their development as viewers, molding their own taste, breadth and appreciation of film. |
